Quotations

how quotes are inserted into sentences

A quotation goes at the end of the sentence, with some sort of pause before it. Don't mutate the beginning of a quotation. This is why Gandalf mistranslated the door of Moria as, "Speak, friend, and enter," instead of, "Say 'friend' and enter."

Amathon ebent: Le melin. - Amathon said, 'I love you.'

Who the quotation is said to is the indirect object and marked with an.

Amathon ebent ań Glaewen: Le melin. - Amathon said to Glaewen, 'I love you.'
Amathon ebent athen: Le melin. - Amathon said to her, 'I love you.'

Since the quotation acts as the direct object, the first verb can behave like an intransitive verb. If it has a dative pronoun, it can be treated like an accusative pronoun, and put before the verb.

Amathon den ebent: Le melin. - Amathon said to her, 'I love you.'
