Select Elvish Words 11.73-11.82: Profit; to Sell

11.73 Gain, Profit

G. gam(m)a- v. “to gain; to be profitable, bring in revenue; ⚠️gain, profit, interest (on moneys), increase”

A word appearing as G. {gamba- >>} gama- or gamma- in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, appearing twice with two different translations: “gain, profit, interest (on moneys), increase” and “to be profitable, bring in revenue; (tr.) to gain” (GL/37). The first set of glosses may be as a noun, despite the “-” at the end of the word form. These words may be related to the early root ᴱ√yṇt from which the adverb G. gantha “more” was derived.

Neo-Sindarin: I would adapt this as a verb ᴺS. ganna- “gain; be profitable, bring in revenue” based on the Neo-Root ᴺ√GYANTA having to do with increase.

11.82 to Sell

ᴱQ. qampa n. “peddlar-goods”

A noun appearing as ᴱQ. qampa “peddlar-goods” in the Qenya Lexicon under the early root ᴱ√QAPA “chaffer” [= haggle] (QL/76).

Neo-Quenya: I would retain ᴺQ. quampa “peddlar-goods” for purposes of Neo-Quenya derived from a Neo-Root ᴺS. √KWAP, since we otherwise have very few words having to do with commerce.

ᴱQ. qampa- v. “to hawk goods”

A verb appearing as ᴱQ. qampa- “to hawk goods” in the Qenya Lexicon under the early root ᴱ√QAPA “chaffer” [= haggle] (QL/76).

Neo-Quenya: I would retain ᴺQ. quampa- “to hawk goods” for purposes of Neo-Quenya derived from a Neo-Root ᴺS. √KWAP, since we otherwise have very few words having to do with commerce.

ᴱQ. qampale n. “chaffering, *haggling, bargaining”

A noun appearing as ᴱQ. qampale “chaffering” in the Qenya Lexicon based on ᴱQ. qampa- “to hawk goods” (QL/76).

Neo-Quenya: Since I retain ᴺQ. quampa- “to hawk goods”, I would retain ᴺQ. quampalë “chaffering, *haggling, bargaining” as well for purposes of Neo-Quenya.

ᴱQ. vakse n. “sale”

A noun appearing as ᴱQ. vakse “sale” in the Qenya Lexicon under the early root ᴱ√VAKA (QL/99).

Neo-Quenya: Merchant words where later transferred to the root ᴹ√MBAKH, so I would adapt this word as ᴺQ. maxë “sale” for purposes of Neo-Quenya.
