12.21 to Gather, Collect
- Q. comya- v. “to collect”
-
A transitive verb in notes from around 1959-60 based on √KOM “gather, collect”, as opposed to intransitive ócom- “gather, assemble” (PE17/158). In a rejected section of the notes where it appeared, komya- was glossed “collect” along a weak past komyane and a deleted variant conta- (PE17/157).
- Q. hosta- v. “to gather (hastily together), collect, assemble, pile up”
-
This was the Quenya verb for “gather” for most of Tolkien’s life. It appeared in notes associated with the Markirya poem from the 1960s with the glosses “gather, collect, assemble” (MC/223). It also appeared in Words, Phrases and Passages from the Lord of the Rings from the late 1950s or early 1960s with the glosses “gather hastily together, pile up” and derived from √KHOT “gather, together in confusion, jumble” (PE17/39). ᴹQ. hosta- “to collect” appeared in The Etymologies of the 1930s under the root ᴹ√KHOTH “gather” (Ety/KHOTH). ᴱQ. hosta- appeared in the Qenya Verb Forms of the 1910s as the basis for ᴱQ. hostalka “able to gather” (PE14/33-34).
- ᴱQ. limna v. “sheaf”
-
A noun appearing as ᴱQ. limna “sheaf” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s under the early root ᴱ√LIMI (QL/54).
Neo-Sindarin: Since √LIM “link, join” survived in Tolkien’s later writings, I would retain ᴺQ. limna “sheaf” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, as a bundle of grains joined together.
- Q. ócom- v. “to gather, assemble”
-
An intransitive verb appearing as ókome “gathers, assembles” in notes from around 1959-60 based on √KOM “gather, collect” (PE17/158). A rejected section of the same notes has okom- “assemble (intransitive)” along with some past and perfect forms (PE17/157).
- G. hosta- v. “to gather, collect”
-
A verb appearing as G. hosta- “gather, collect” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/49) likely based on the early root ᴱ√HOSO or ᴱ√ΧOÞ (QL/41).
Conceptual Development: Q. hosta- meant “gather, collect” in Tolkien’s later writings based on the later root √KHOT(H), so I would retain ᴺS. hosta- “to gather, collect” as well, reconceived as a derivative of the later form of the root.
- G. lim v. “sheaf, bundle”
-
A noun appearing as G. lim² “a sheaf, bundle” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/54), clearly based on the early root ᴱ√LIMI from which ᴱQ. limna “sheaf” was derived (QL/54).
Neo-Sindarin: Since I retain ᴺQ. limna “sheaf” for purposes of Neo-Quenya based on the later root √LIM “link, join”, I would retain and adapt the Gnomish noun as ᴺS. levn “sheaf, bundle” to be a more direct cognate.
