12.32 Low

ᴹQ. tumna adj. “lowlying, low; deep, [ᴱQ.] profound; ⚠️dark, hidden”

An adjective in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “lowlying, deep, low” derived from ᴹ✶tubnā “deep” under the root ᴹ√TUB (Ety/TUB).

Conceptual Development: The Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s had ᴱQ. tumna “deep, profound, dark or hidden” under the early root ᴱ√TUM(B)U (QL/95).

Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya, I include the early gloss “profound” but not “dark or hidden”.

G. haug adj. “low”

A word appearing as G. haug “low” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s based on G. haw- “rest” that was also the basis for G. haus “bed” (GL/48).

Neo-Sindarin: Since ᴹ√KHAW “rest” survived in Tolkien’s later writings with derivatives like [N.] haust “bed”, I think ᴺS. haug “low” can be retained for purposes of Neo-Sindarin.

G. haugrin adj. “lowly, humble, mean”

An adjective appearing as G. haugrin “lowly, humble, mean” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s based on G. haug “low” (GL/48).

Neo-Sindarin: Since I retain ᴺS. haug “low” for purposes of Neo-Sindarin, I would retain this word as well, but adapted as ᴺS. hogren “lowly, humble, mean” to better fit Sindarin phonology.

N. tofn adj. “lowlying, deep, low”

An adjective appearing as N. tofn “lowlying, deep, low” in The Etymologies of the 1930s, derived from ᴹ✶tubnā “deep” under the root ᴹ√TUB (Ety/TUB).

Neo-Sindarin: For purposes of Neo-Sindarin, I would adapt this word as ᴺS. tovn “lowlying, deep, low” to better fit Sindarin orthography.
