13.35 Last

Q. métima adj. “last, ultimate, final”

A word for “last, ultimate, final” from the 1960s version of the Markirya poem (MC/221-222), clearly based on the root √MET “end, finality”.

Conceptual Development: The version of the poem from around 1930 had ᴱQ. oilima “last” instead (MC/213-214). It had variants oilin and ᴱQ. oilimaite appearing drafts (PE16/62; MC/221), the latter with additional glosses “final, ultimate” (PE16/75).

Q. telda adj. “last, final”

A word for “last, final” in the Quendi and Eldar essay (Q&E) from 1959-60 based on the root √TELE “close, end, come at the end” (WJ/411), so likely “last or final in a series”.

ᴹQ. tella adj. “hindmost, last”

An adjective in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “hindmost, last” derived from primitive ᴹ✶télesā under the root ᴹ√TELES “hindmost, tarrier” (Ety/TELES).

Q. telu adj. “last; ⚠️ [ᴱQ.] end (fate), close”

An apparently adjectival element in the name Telufinwë meaning “last”.

Conceptual Development: In the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s, ᴱQ. telu was a noun meaning “end, close” (QL/91). In the contemporaneous Poetic and Mythological Words of Eldarissa it was glossed “end (fate)” (PME/91).

Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya, I would use this element only in compounds since it is not clear what its independent singular or plural forms would be (telo, telwi?). For the ordinary adjective, I’d use métima or telda.

ᴱQ. telúmea adj. “conclusive, ⚠️final, end, last; extreme”

A word appearing as ᴱQ. telūmea “final, conclusive, end; last; extreme” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s, an adjectival form of ᴱQ. telū̆me “finish, conclusion” under the early root ᴱ√TEL+U of similar meaning (QL/91).

Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya, I would update this word to ᴺQ. telmëa “conclusive” based on the later word telma “conclusion”.

ᴱQ. telusta adj. “outer, extreme, ultimate”

A word appearing as ᴱQ. telusta or [telust]ina “outer, extreme, ultimate” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s, an adjectival form of ᴱQ. teluste “extremity” (QL/91).

Neo-Quenya: Since I retain ᴺQ. telustë “extremity” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, I would retain ᴺQ. telusta “outer, extreme, ultimate” as well.

ᴹQ. tyelima adj. “final”

A word appearing as ᴹQ. tyelima “final” in The Etymologies of the 1930s based on ᴹQ. tyel- “end, cease” from the root (Ety/TYEL).

Neo-Quenya: I would udpate this word to [ᴺQ.] telima “final” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, since in Tolkien’s later writings the verb for “to end” became tel-. See the root √TEL for further discussion.

S. medui adj. “end, final, last”

An adjective for “end, final, last” mutated after a preposition in the phrase ai na vedui Dúnadan “Ah! at last, Dúnadan!” (LotR/209; PE17/16). It is a combination of √MET “end, finality” with the Sindarin adjective suffix -ui.

S. meth n. and adj. “last; [N.] end”

The noun N. meth “end” appeared in The Etymologies of the 1930s, derived from ᴹ✶metta under the root ᴹ√MET of the same meaning and followed by an adjective form N. methen that was also glossed “end” (Ety/MET). It reappeared as an element in the name Rochon Methestel “Rider of the Last Hope” (UT/313). It is therefore possible that meth shifted from a noun to an adjective, but its Quenya equivalent metta “ending, end” remained a noun in Tolkien’s later writings.

Neo-Sindarin: For purposes of Neo-Sindarin, I would avoid meth as an independent word, and would use the unambiguous noun form methed and adjective forms medui or [N.] methen. If you do use meth, I recommend using it as a noun.
