Select Elvish Words: 12.72 Hollow, Concave

12.72 Hollow, Concave

Q. náva adj. “hollow”

A word for “hollow” derived from primitive ✶nābā implied by the name Návarot “Hollowbold” (WJ/389, 414).

ᴱQ. rotse adj. “pipe, tube”

The Qenya Lexicon had ᴱQ. rotse “pipe (tube)” and ᴱQ. rōta “tube, hollow cylinder”, both under the early root ᴱ√ROTO “hollow” (QL/80).

Neo-Quenya: I would retain ᴺQ. rotsë “pipe, tube” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, since √ROT was still associated with hollow things like caves and tunnels in Tolkien’s later writings.

ᴹQ. unka- v. “to hollow out”

A verb for “hollow out” in The Etymologies of the 1930s under the root ᴹ√UNUK (Ety/UNUK).

ᴹQ. unqa adj. “hollow”

An adjective for “hollow” in The Etymologies of the 1930s under the root ᴹ√UNUK (Ety/UNUK).

Q. unquë n. “hollow, [ᴹQ.] cavity, hole”

A noun for “a hollow” and name of tengwa #16 in The Lord of the Rings appendices (LotR/1123). The word ᴹQ. unqe “hole, hollow” also appeared in The Etymologies of the 1930s under the root ᴹ√UNUK (Ety/UNUK; EtyAC/UNUK), and was the name of tengwa #16 in documents on the The Feanorian Alphabet from the 1930s and 40s where it was glossed “cavity” (PE22/22, 51). Based on its glosses I would assume unquë would not apply to holes in an object that pass all the way through it, for which other words like [ᴹQ.] assa and [ᴹQ.] terra might be used.

S. coll adj. “hollow”

The most common Sindarin word for “hollow” as mentioned in the Quendi and Eldar essay from 1959-60, derived from primitive ✶kuldā (WJ/414).

Conceptual Development: The Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s had G. cub “hollow” with deleted variant {cûf >>} (GL/27), probably based on the early root ᴱ√KUPU “hump” (QL/49).

S. †naw adj. “hollow”

An archaic word for “hollow” derived from primitive ✶nābā, largely replaced by S. coll “hollow” in modern Sindarin as mentioned in the Quendi and Eldar essay from 1959-60 (WJ/414). It survived as nǭf in the Northern dialect of Sindarin, but in other dialects the ǭ became au, after which the final v was lost, making the word naw rather indistinctive leading it to fall out of use.

N. rhaudh adj. “hollow, cavernous”

A word appearing as N. rhaudh “hollow, cavernous” in The Etymologies of the 1930s, derived from ᴹ✶rōda [rǭda] based on the root ᴹ√ROD “cave” (Ety/ROD).

Neo-Sindarin: Many Neo-Sindarin writers adapt this adjective as ᴺS. raudh “hollow, cavernous” for purposes of Neo-Sindarin as suggested in Hiswelókë’s Sindarin Dictionary (HSD), since the unvoicing of initial r to rh was a feature of Noldorin of the 1930s but not Sindarin of the 1950s and 60s.

Conceptual Development: The Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s had G. rothrin “hollow” based on G. †roth “cave, grot” (GL/65). It also had G. rûdin “hollow, cavernous” based on G. †rûda, an archaic form of grûd(a) “cavern” (GL/42, 66).
