12.77 Cross

ᴹQ. hwarma n. “crossbar”

A word for “crossbar” in The Etymologies of the 1930s under the root ᴹ√SKWAR “crooked” (Ety/SKWAR).

ᴱQ. tarwe n. “cross, crucifix”

A word appearing as ᴱQ. {taure >>} tarwe “a cross, Crucifix” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s under the early root ᴱ√TARA¹ having to do with crossing (QL/89). ᴱQ. tarwe “cross” also appeared in the contemporaneous Poetic and Mythological Words of Eldarissa (PME/89).

Neo-Quenya: In Tolkien’s later writings, the root for “across” became √THAR, but I think ᴺQ. tarwë “cross” might still be used, especially in its sense “crucifix”, based on the later root √TAR “stand”.

ᴱQ. tarwesta- v. “to crucify”

A word appearing as ᴱQ. tarwesta- “crucify” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s, a verb form of ᴱQ. tarwe “cross, crucifix” (QL/89).

Neo-Quenya: Since I retain ᴺQ. tarwë “cross, crucifix” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, I would retain ᴺQ. tarwesta- “to crucify” as well.

G. taru n. “cross, *crucifix; ⚠️crossing”

A word appearing as G. {taru, tarb >>} taru in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s meaning either “cross” or “crossing” (GL/69), clearly the equivalent of ᴱQ. tarwe “cross, crucifix” under the early root ᴱ√TARA¹ in the contemporaneous Qenya Lexicon (QL/89).

Neo-Sindarin: Since I retain ᴺQ. tarwë “cross, crucifix” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, I would retain ᴺS. taru for Neo-Sindarin as well, but only in the sense “cross, *crucifix”. For “crossing” I would use later words like athrad.
