14.21 Fast, Swift, Quick

ᴹQ. alako n. “rush, rushing flight, wild wind”

A word in The Etymologies of the 1930s derived from ᴹ✶álākō “rush, rushing flight, wild wind” under the root ᴹ√ÁLAK “rushing” (Ety/ÁLAK).

ᴹQ. (a)larka adj. “swift, rapid”

An adjective in The Etymologies of the 1930s given as ᴹQ. larka or alarka “swift, rapid”, derived from ᴹ✶lakra under the root ᴹ√LAK² “swift” and cognate to N. lhagr (Ety/LAK²).

Conceptual Development: The Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s had ᴱQ. arauka or rauka “rushing, swift” based on the early roots ᴱ√RAVA or ᴱ√RAẆA (QL/34, 79). The form ᴱQ. arauka also appeared in Early Noldorin word-lists of the 1920s as a cognate to ᴱN. arog “swift” (PE13/137, 160). Drafts of the Oilima Markirya from around 1930 has ᴱQ. rauko “ravening, rushing” (PE16/77).

ᴹQ. lhit- v. “to speed swiftly, race, dash, hurtle”

A verb appearing only in its past tense form lhinte “sped” on a page of deleted roots in the Quenya Verbal System (QVS) from 1948, based on ᴹ√(S)LIT which itself had an unclear gloss, perhaps “swiftly, speed” (PE22/116). It was likely related to Q. linta “swift”.

Neo-Quenya: I would retain this word for purposes of Neo-Quenya, but adapted as ᴺQ. hlit- to better fit Quenya orthography. In a 2024-01-31 post to the Vinyë Lambengolmor Discord Server (VLDS), Luinyelle suggested it may mean “to speed swiftly, race, dash, hurtle”.

⚠️Q. limbë (limbi-) adj. “quick, swift”

A Quenya cognate to S. lim “quick, swift” in notes on Words, Phrases and Passages from the Lord of the Rings (WPP) from the late 1950s or early 1960s, both derived from primitive ✶lĭmbĭ (PE17/18).

Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya I would stick to better known Q. linta “swift”.

Q. linta adj. “swift”

The usual Quenya word for “swift” (PE17/59, 63), best known from the phrase yéni ve lintë yuldar avánier “the years have passed like swift draughts” where it appeared in its plural form linte (LotR/377; RGEO/58).

Q. lintië n. “swiftness, speed; swiftly, *quickly”

A noun form of linta “swift” and thus meaning “swiftness”, but also useable as an adverb meaning “swiftly” as was often the case with abstract nouns in Quenya (PE17/58-59).

ᴹQ. rimpa adj. “rushing, flying”

An adjective in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “rushing, flying” under the root ᴹ√RIP “rush, fly, fling” (Ety/RIP).

⚠️Q. rindë adj. “swift”

A Quenya word for “swift” appearing only in its plural form rindi in the phrase i rokkor rindi “the horses are swift” from Common Eldarin: Noun Structure from the early 1950s (PE21/78).

Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya I would stick to better known Q. linta “swift”.
