14.30 Eternity
- Q. oialë adv. “forever, everlastingly, eternally, in eternity; ⚠️[ᴹQ.] everlasting age”
-
A word variously glossed “forever” (RGEO/58), “everlastingly” (PE17/73-74), or “eternally” (PE17/59), an adverbial form of oia(la) “everlasting”.
Conceptual Development: In The Etymologies of the 1930s ᴹQ. oiale was apparently a noun glossed “everlasting (age?)” under the root ᴹ√OY¹ “ever, eternal” (Ety/OY), replacing ᴹQ. iale under the (rejected) root ᴹ√GEY “ever, eternal” (Ety/GEY).
- ᴹQ. oire n. “everlasting age, *forever”
-
A word in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “everlasting (age?)” as a variant of ᴹQ. oiale under the root ᴹ√OY¹ “ever, eternal” (Ety/OY). It replaced ᴹQ. aire and íre³ under the (rejected) roots ᴹ√EY and ᴹ√GEY (Ety/EY, GEY).
Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya, I would assume oire is the noun form of “*forever”, whereas oiale is adverbial “forever”.
- N. uir n. “eternity”
-
A word in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “eternity” under the root ᴹ√OY¹ “ever, eternal” (Ety/OY). It replaced N. guir under the (rejected) root ᴹ√GEY (Ety/GEY).
14.302 Eternal
- Q. oia(la) adj. “everlasting, unceasing, without end, for ever”
-
The word oia is usually translated “everlasting” (PE17/59, 74; Ety/OY). In one place it was translated “unceasing, without end, for ever” and given a variant form oiala (PE17/69). It is derived from √OY “ever” (PE17/69; Ety/OY). In The Etymologies of the 1930s oia was given as both an adjective and adverb (EtyAC/OY), but in Tolkien’s later writings oialë was the adverbial form.
- Q. oialëa adj. “eternal”
-
A word for “eternal”, adjectival form of oialë “eternally” (PE17/59).
Conceptual Development: The Etymologies of the 1930s had ᴹQ. {aira >>} íra “eternal” under the rejected roots ᴹ√EY and ᴹ√GEY (Ety/EY, GEY), updated to ᴹQ. oira “eternal” under ᴹ√OY “ever, eternal” (Ety/OY).
Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya, I think oialë and oira “eternal” can coexist.
- Q. oi(o) adv. and n. “ever, everlastingly; an endless period, *eternity, aeon”
-
A word for “ever” or “everlastingly” appearing as oio or oi and derived from the root √OY of similar meaning (PE17/69; RGEO/61; SA/los; Ety/OY). In one place it was glossed “an endless period” (UT/317) perhaps meaning it could also be used as a noun = “*eternity”.
Conceptual Development: The Etymologies of the 1930s at first had ᴹQ. ia “ever” under the rejected roots ᴹ√EY, ᴹ√GEY (Ety/EY, GEY) before Tolkien settled on ᴹQ. oi “ever” < ᴹ√OY (Ety/OY).
- Q. tennoio adv. “forever[more]”
-
A word glossed “for ever” in the phrase ar i Eru i or ilyë mahalmar ëa tennoio “and of the One who is above all thrones for ever” (UT/305). It is a combination of tenna “until” and oi(o) “ever”, so perhaps more literally “until eternity” = “*forevermore”. As such I think this word specifically implies “from now until the end of time” but not necessarily forever in the past, as opposed to oialë which can be used to mean “forever” both forwards and backwards in time.
- ᴹQ. voron(an) adv. “steadfastly, steadily, unremittingly, unceasingly”
-
A word for “steadfastly, steadily, unremittingly, unceasingly” in Demonstrative, Relative, and Correlative Stems (DRC) from 1948 (PE23/110), a combination of ᴹQ. voro “ever” and the suffix -n(an) having to do with time.
- ᴱQ. voruva adj. “age long”
-
An adjective appearing as ᴱQ. voruva “age long” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s under the early root ᴱ√VORO (QL/102).
Neo-Quenya: Since ᴹQ. voro still means “ever, continually” in Tolkien’s later writings, I would retain ᴺQ. voruva “age long” for purposes of Neo-Quenya.
- N. uireb adj. “eternal”
-
A word in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “eternal”, an adjectival form of uir “eternity” under the root ᴹ√OY¹ “ever, eternal” (Ety/OY). It replaced N. guireb under the (rejected) root ᴹ√GEY (Ety/GEY).
