14.29 Ready
- Q. férima adj. “ready to hand, (quickly) available”
-
An adjective in Definitive Linguistic Notes (DLN) of 1959 based on the root √PHERE, equivalent to S. ferui “ready to hand, (quickly) available” (PE17/181).
Conceptual Development: The Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s had ᴱQ. manwa “ready” derived from primitive maznwa based on the early root ᴱ√M(B)ASA “cook, bake”, along with a related verb ᴱQ. manwa- “prepare” (QL/59). Given the root, these words might only refer to ready and preparing food.
- Q. ferya- v. “to make ready (promptly), *prepare”
-
A verb in Definitive Linguistic Notes (DLN) of 1959 based on the root √PHERE, equivalent to S. feria- “make ready (promptly)” (PE17/181).
Conceptual Development: The Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s had ᴱQ. manwa- “prepare” based on the early root ᴱ√M(B)ASA “cook, bake” and related to ᴱQ. manwa “ready” (QL/59). Given the root, these words might only refer to readying and preparing food.
Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya, I would use ferya- to mean both “make ready” and “*prepare”, but “*prepare” in its most general sense, not just preparing food.
- ᴱQ. mar- v. “to get ripe, come to ripeness, get ready, grow up, get mellow”
-
A verb appearing as ᴱQ. mar- in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “get ripe, come to ripeness, get ready, grow up, get mellow” based on the early root ᴱ√MARA¹ “ripe, yellow” (QL/59, 63). The untranslated phrase ᴱQ. yain tavárin lilyen marden from the late 1920s might contain a (3rd sg. fem) form of this verb (PE16/80), though it could mean something else [“dwell”?] in the phrase instead.
Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya, I would replace this verb with ᴺQ. malimarya- “to ripen, become ripe, mature [of plants], mellow [of alcohol]”, an inceptive verb based on [ᴺQ.] malima “ripe”.
- ᴱQ. marin(a) adj. “xxx”
-
An adjective appearing as ᴱQ. marin(a) in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “ripe, mature” based on the early root ᴱ√MARA¹ “ripe, yellow” (QL/59, 63). This early root was related to ᴱ√MALA² “yellow” (QL/63).
Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya, I would update this verb to ᴺQ. malima “ripe, mature [of plants]”, assuming the Elves associated ripeness with the colour yellow (Q. malina). The neologism malima is based on the root √MAL for yellow and gold words, combined with -ima which as a general adjective suffix means “having a (strong) nature of”; compare calima “bright” and vanima “beautiful”.
- Q. mína adj. “desiring to start, eager to go”
-
An adjective in notes associated with the Quendi and Eldar essay from 1959-60 glossed “desiring to start, eager to go” based on ancient desiderative ✶meinā (VT39/11).
- S. fair adj. “quick, ready, prompt”
-
A word for “quick, ready, prompt” in Definitive Linguistic Notes (DLN) from 1959 based on primitive ✶pheryā and the root √PHERE (PE17/181). It had a prefixal variant fer-, presumably based directly on the root.
- S. feria- v. “to make ready (promptly)”
-
A verb in Definitive Linguistic Notes (DLN) of 1959 glossed “make ready (promptly)” and derived from the root √PHERE (PE17/181).
- S. ferui adj. “ready to hand, (quickly) available”
-
An adjective in Definitive Linguistic Notes (DLN) of 1959 glossed “ready to hand, (quickly) available” and derived from the root √PHERE (PE17/181). Previously the glosses of this word were {“easy” >> “prompt” >>} “ready to hand”.
- N. hûr adj. “readiness for action, vigour, fiery spirit”
-
A word in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “readiness for action, vigour, fiery spirit” under the root ᴹ√KHOR “set going, put in motion, urge on” (Ety/KHOR).
- ᴱN. marn adj. “[G.] ripe”
-
The Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s had G. maron or marn “ripe” (GL/56), clearly cognate to ᴱQ. marin(a) “ripe, mature” from the contemporaneous Qenya Lexicon based on the early root ᴱ√MARA¹ “ripe, yellow” (QL/59, 63). Early Noldorin word-lists of the 1920s had ᴱN. marn but without any translation (PE13/150).
Neo-Sindarin: We have no later word for “ripe” so I would retain ᴺS. marn “ripe” for purposes of Neo-Sindarin. The early root ᴱ√MARA¹ was a variant of ᴱ√MALA² “yellow”, and √MAL remains the basis of “yellow” words in Tolkien’s later writings. I would assume marn “ripe” is the result of some ancient L/R variation on the root √MAL; compare S. -rim vs. Q. -li “many”.
