- ᴱQ. nyas n. “scratch, score, line, mark”
-
A noun appearing as ᴱQ. nyas “scratch, score, line, mark” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s with a stem form of nyast-, derived from the early root ᴱ√NYASA (QL/68).
Neo-Quenya: I would retain ᴺQ. nyas “scratch, score, line, mark” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, but would assume it was derived from a Neo-Root ᴺ√NYATH “scratch”, so having a stem form of nyaþ-.
- ᴱQ. nyas- v. “to scratch”
-
A verb appearing as ᴱQ. nyasa- “to scratch” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s, derived from the early root ᴱ√NYASA (QL/68).
Neo-Quenya: I would retain ᴺQ. nyas- “to scratch” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, but would assume it was derived from a Neo-Root ᴺ√NYATH “scratch”, where its s was originally þ.
- G. rimp n. “shred, slice, sliver”
-
A noun appearing as G. rimp “shred, slice, sliver” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/65). It was probably based on the early root ᴱ√RIPI “a rim” from the contemporaneous Qenya Lexicon; compare ᴱQ. ripta- “to cut in strips, tear up” from this same root (QL/80).
Neo-Sindarin: Since I retain the Neo-Root ᴺ√RIP with the sense “strip, stripe”, I would retain ᴺS. rimp “shred, slice, sliver” as well.
- G. thas- v. “to shave”
-
A verb appearing as G. thas- “shave” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/72). It seems to have replaced a rejected word G. cautha- “shave” (GL/24).
Neo-Sindarin: I would retain ᴺS. thas- “to shave” for purposes of Neo-Sindarin as a derivative of the Neo-Root ᴺ√THATH “shave”, where the s is the result of dissimilation away from the initial th. Given the rarity of Elvish beards, this word probably originally applied to shaving the surface of wood.
- G. thasc adj. “shaven”
-
An adjective appearing as G. {thathra >>} thasc “shaven” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, an adjectival form of G. thas- “shave” (GL/72).
Neo-Sindarin: I would adapt this word as ᴺS. thasg “shaven” for purposes of Neo-Sindarin, since sc usually became sg in Sindarin of the 1950s and 60s.
- G. thasgim n. “razor, (lit.) shave-blade”
-
The Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s had a word thastril “razor”, an elaboration of G. thas- “shave” (GL/72). It also had (unglossed) G. thasgim probably of the same meaning, a combination of G. thas- “shave” and G. cim “blade” (GL/26).
Neo-Sindarin: Since I retain both ᴺS. thas- “shave” and ᴺS. cim “blade” for purposes of Neo-Sindarin, I would use ᴺS. thasgim for “razor”.
- G. thast n. “shaving(s)”
-
A noun appearing as G. thast “shaving” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s as a noun form of G. thas- “shave”, along with an abstract form thathri “shavings, sawdust” (GL/72).
Conceptual Development: When the entry was first written, this word was initially glosses “a razor”, while thathra was “shaving”. Then thathra was deleted and thast became “a razor, shaving”, and finally just “shaving” as noted above.
Neo-Sindarin: Since I retain ᴺS. thas- “shave” I would keep ᴺS. thast as well, but I would use it for “shaving(s)” the result of shaving, and would use the gerund *thased for the act of shaving.
- N. thrib- v. “to scratch”
-
A verb in The Etymologies of the 1930s appearing in its (Noldorin) infinitive form N. thribi “to scratch” derived from the root ᴹ√SRIP of the same meaning (Ety/SRIP).
Neo-Sindarin: I would adapt this verb as ᴺS. rhib- “to scratch” for purposes of Neo-Sindarin, as suggested in Hiswelókë’s Sindarin Dictionary (HSD), since primitive sr became voiceless rh in Sindarin of the 1950s and 60s.
