Select Elvish Words 5.25-5.33: Oven, Pot, Dish, Bowl

5.25 Oven

ᴱQ. urna n. “oven”
A noun appearing as ᴱQ. urna “oven” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s under the early root ᴱ√USU or ᴱ√UŘU [UÐU] whose derivatives had to do with burning (QL/98).

Neo-Quenya: I would retain ᴺQ. urna for purposes of Neo-Quenya, reconceived of as a derivative of the later root √UR “heat”.

G. bothli n. “oven”
A noun appearing as G. bothli “oven” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, derived from primitive ᴱ✶mᵇāsḷ (GL/23) and thus based on the early root ᴱ√M(B)ASA “cook, bake” (QL/63).

Neo-Sindarin: Since √MBAS “bake” continued to appear in Tolkien’s later writings, I would retain this word but adapt it as ᴺS. bothol “oven” to better fit later Sindarin phonology: [mbāslǝ] > [mbǭsḷ] > [mbauθḷ] > [boθol]. Here final syllabic became -ol, as in tachol < ✶tankl(a) (PE18/100).

5.26 Pot

ᴹQ. kalpa n. “water-vessel, bucket”
A noun in The Etymologies of the late 1930s glossed “water-vessel” under the root ᴹ√KALPA of the same meaning (Ety/KALPA). The word ᴱQ. kalpa “bucket, vessel” also appeared in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s under the early root ᴱ√KḶPḶ “hold, contains (esp. of liquids)” where Tolkien also considered and rejected another form kalpe (QL/47). The word appeared again in the Declension of Nouns of the early 1930s with the gloss “bucket” (PE21/8).
ᴹQ. tambe (tambi-) n. “pot”
A word in the Declension of Nouns (DN) from the early 1930s whose archaic form tambı̯ǝ was glossed “pot” (PE21/12). Its inflected forms indicate its stem form was effectively tambi- (PE21/12). Tambe is probably related to ᴱQ. tambin “cauldron” from the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s under the early root ᴱ√TAMA “beat; smelt, forge” (QL/88).
ᴱQ. tambin (tambind-) n. “cauldron”
A noun appearing as ᴱQ. tambin (tambind-) in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s somewhat cryptically glossed “a copper or cauldron”, derived from the early root ᴱ√TAMA “beat; smelt, forge” (QL/88). It also appeared in the Poetic and Mythological Words of Eldarissa of the same period, with the more straightforward gloss “cauldron” (PME/88).

Neo-Quenya: The root √TAM appeared in Tolkien’s later writing in connection to craft words, so I would retain this word as ᴺQ. tambin “cauldron” for purposes of Neo-Quenya.

G. ceral n. “jar”
A noun appearing as G. ceral “jar” in Gnomish Lexicon Slips of the 1910s from primitive ᴱ✶keréldǝ (PE13/116). It is likely based on the early root ᴱ√KERE “turn” (QL/46).

Neo-Sindarin: A similar root √KWER “revolve” appears in Tolkien’s later writing, so I would adapt this noun as ᴺS. perol “jar” from ancient *kwerḷ.

G. tambos n. “cauldron”
A noun appearing as G. tambos “a cauldron” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s (GL/69). It is likely based on the early root ᴱ√TAMA “beat; smelt, forge” referring to the cauldron’s construction from beaten metal (QL/88).

Neo-Sindarin: The root √TAM appeared in Tolkien’s later writing in connection to craft words, so I would retain and adapt this word as ᴺS. tammos “cauldron” for purposes of Neo-Sindarin.

5.31 Dish

ᴱQ. vene n. “dish, [eating] vessel, ⚠️small boat”
A noun appearing as ᴱQ. vene in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s, initially glossed “small boat” and then with the glosses “vessel, dish” added, listed under the early root ᴱ√VENE {“small boat” >>} “shape, cut out, scoop” (QL/100-101).

Neo-Quenya: I would retain ᴺQ. venë for purposes of Neo-Quenya with the more limited meaning “[eating] vessel, dish”. I would reconceive of it as a derivative of the 1930s root ᴹQ. BEN “corner, angle”.

5.33 Bowl

Q. nanwa n. “a (large) bowl”
A word for “a (large) bowl or similar artifact” in notes from the late 1960s, derived from primitive ✶nadmā based on the root √NAD “hollow” (NM/351).
ᴱQ. tolpo n. “bowl”
A word appearing as ᴱQ. tolpo “bowl” in Early Qenya Word-lists of the 1920s (PE16/142). The Qenya Lexicon and Poetic and Mythological Words of Eldarissa of the 1910s instead had ᴱQ. salpa “bowl” derived the early root ᴱ√SḶPḶ (QL/84).

Neo-Quenya: I would use the later word ᴺQ. tolpo as the Neo-Quenya word for “bowl”, since later ON. salpha from the 1930s was “broth” rather than “bowl” (Ety/SÁLAP).

G. salf n. “bowl, basin”
The Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s had G. {salpa >> salp >>} salf “bowl, basin” (GL/66), clearly based on the early root ᴱ√SḶPḶ which also had ᴱQ. salpa “bowl” (QL/84).

Neo-Quenya: The Etymologies of the 1930s had N. salff “broth” under the root ᴹ√SALAP (Ety/SÁLAP). To avoid a conflict, I would coin a neologism ᴺS. tolph “bowl, basin” based on ᴱQ. tolpo of the same meaning from Early Qenya Word-lists of the 1920s (PE16/142).
