13.165 to Add, Increase

Q. napan- vb. “to add”

A verb in Quenya Notes (QN) from 1957, a combination of the prefix na-¹ “plu-” with pan- (PE17/146) whose root √PAN means “arrange, set in order” (PE17/108), so more literally “*arrange with addition”.

ᴱQ. yanta- vb. “to add to, enlarge, increase, augment”

A word appearing as ᴱQ. ’yanta- “enlarge, increase, add to” in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s under the early root ᴱ√YṆTṆ (QL/106). It was also mentioned in the contemporaneous Gnomish Lexicon as a cognate to G. intha- of similar meaning (GL/37). It appeared as yantya “add (to), to augment” in the English-Qenya Dictionary of the 1920s, but those entries were marked through (PE15/68-69).

Neo-Quenya: For purposes of Neo-Quenya, I retain ᴺQ. yanta- “to add to, enlarge, increase, augment” based on a Neo-Root ᴺ√GYANTA. If you subscribe to the sound change whereby gy became ly (as I used to do in earlier versions of this lexicon), its proper form might be lyanta-.

N. galw n. “?increase, growth”

An unglossed word in The Etymologies of the 1930s derived from the root ᴹ√GALA “thrive” (Ety/GALA). This entry had several similar Quenya words: ᴹQ. alma “good fortune, weal, wealth” and ᴹQ. almie or almare “blessedness, ‘blessings’, good fortune, bliss”. An earlier, deleted version of this entry had ᴹQ. alma “[?increase], growth” followed by N. galw (EtyAC/GAL²). The challenge in interpreting this Noldorin word is that it cannot plausibly be derived from *galm(a), since that would produce galf [galv]; compare N. dalf < ON. dalma.

Neo-Sindarin: In later Sindarin, final w is more often represented as u, so I would use ᴺS. galu as suggested by Hiswelókë’s Sindarin Dictionary (HSD). HSD also suggested this word might mean “good fortune, blessedness, blessings”, but I use “increase, growth” from the deleted entry and assume it is derived from *galwā. For the other meanings I would suggest using ᴺS. alvar “(good) luck, fortune”, ᴺS. elias “blessedness”, or ᴺS. eliad “blessing”.
