14.252 to Last

Q. termar- v. “to stand, *endure, last, (lit.) through-abide”

A verb appearing only in its future form termaruva “shall stand” in the phrase vanda sina termaruva Elenna·nóreo alcar enyalien “This oath shall stand in memory of the glory of the Land of the Star” (UT/305). It is a combination of ter “through” and mar- “abide”, so likely meaning something like “*endure, last”.

ᴹQ. vóre n. “lasting”

A word in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “lasting” under the root ᴹ√BOR “endure” (EtyAC/BOR). Helge Fauskanger suggested it is likely a noun given obviously adjectival ᴹQ. vórea “continuous, enduring, lasting” (QQ/vórë).

ᴹQ. vórea adj. and n. “continuous, enduring, lasting; continuant”

A word in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “continuous, enduring, lasting”, an adjectival form ᴹQ. vóre “lasting” (EtyAC/BOR). In its plural form, vórear was used as a term for “continuants”: consonants with a continuing sound as opposed to ᴹQ. puntar “stops” (PE18/30).

ᴱQ. vorinqile n. “monotony”

A word ᴱQ. vorinqile “monotony” appeared in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s as a combination of ᴱQ. vor(o) “ever” and ᴱQ. inqile “sameness” (QL/102).

Neo-Quenya: Since I update ᴱQ. inqile to ᴺQ. imyalë “sameness” for purposes of Neo-Quenya, I would likewise update the word for “monotony” to ᴺQ. vorimyalë.

ᴹQ. vorongandele n. “continual repetition, (lit.) harping on one tune”

A word in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “continual repetition”, more literally “harping on one tune”, a combination of ᴹQ. voro “ever” and ᴹQ. nandele “harping” (Ety/BOR; EtyAC/BOR). In The Etymologies as published in The Lost Road the form given was vorogandele with a g (LR/353), but Carl Hostetter and Patrick Wynne corrected this to vorongandele with an ng in their Addenda and Corrigenda to the Etymologies (VT45/7).

Conceptual Development: The Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s had ᴱQ. vorokantele “monotonous repetition” or “harping, vain repetition”, where the second element was ᴱQ. kantele “harping” (QL/45, 102).

ᴹQ. voronwa adj. “enduring, long-lasting”

An adjective in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “enduring, long-lasting” under the root ᴹ√BORÓN (Ety/BORÓN).

N. brona- v. “to last, survive”

A verb in The Etymologies of the 1930s appearing as a Noldorin-style infinitive brono “last, survive” under the root ᴹ√BORÓN (Ety/BORÓN).
